Endangered!
The marine iguana has been on the endangered species list since 2004. This is because tourism in the Galapagos has increased and humans are threatening their habitat. Also, unseasonably warm waters referred to as El Nino, have threatened the iguanas numbers. The WWF, Charles Darwin Foundation, and the Ecuadorian government are all helping to protect the marine iguana. As part of the effort to protect them, these organizations have helped raise awareness of the importance of the iguanas nesting zone and have put up additional signs to inform locals and tourists. A temporary fence was also built to protect the area.
